Day 3 Update
posted on 03/03/2010Attending a Hockey World Cup is a great experience - when the hockey family joins together and comes to see their team in action, one of the great things is for host and overseas visitors is that they can watch the game and share the fun with spectators from the other competing countries who normally sit alongside one an other and share their memories and experiences together. So far at this World cup, despite the increased levels of security required, this hockey tradition happily has continued. Even in the opening day match between Pakistan and India rival spectators were able to cheer their team on with great enthusiasm without their enthusiasm going too far.
There were lots of important goals scored using Grays sticks in the second round of matches in Pool B
South African Grays sponsored player Marvin Harper scored two of his team's goals in their 6 - 4 defeat by England. He opened the scoring for the Springboks in a free flowing match that provided great entertainment for the crowd. Ashley Jackson scored his second goal of the tournament following a fine English move that was finished off by Ash with a far post tap in. As such England maintained their 100% record to top the pool after two games. Both Ali Brogden and Adam Dixon had influencial games
A goal by 19 year old World Cup debutant Haseem Khan - that turned out to be the winner three minutes from time, gave his Pakistan team a hard earned first win at the World Cup against a resolute Spain. Needing to win to get back into the tournament and silence their critics after their first day loss to hosts India, Haseem was using his Grays stick to good effect when deflecting in both his goals. In this vital game it was sufficient to earn him the Man of the match award.
Despite being roared on by an excited crowd, India were on the end of a bounce back Australian performance where they Aussies ran out 5-2 winners. Mark Knowles and Eddie Ockenden both using their GX 7000 sticks were the backbone of many Australian attacks.
After two games in the pool, four teams now all have 3 points so there is still lots to play for over the remaining games and looks certain to go down to the wire.
